Carl A. "Slim" Hennicke
By Mabel (Von Hugel) Lawler (Life Member #30)

Just to say I remember "Slim" Hennicke very well. I was fortunate to know and meet him while he was still with us. My husband Carl and I had the pleasure of visiting him at his home and viewing all of his aviation memorabilia. He showed us the very large funnel he used to put gas in the "Spirit of St. Louis," and signed by Lindy. What a treasure. We held it in our hands, what a thrill that was, something to remember always.

He had his own museum in the basement of his home. It was great, all little cubby holes (bins) around the walls, each had a name in front, as Chamberlin, Lindbergh, Earhart, etc. When he had information on any of them it went into the correct bin. I gave hisome things on Clarence Chamberlin and a couple of tickets from Roosevelt Field Flying Corp. to take a ride for $1.50 this was 1931, Sept. 7th.

What wonderful memories those "Good Old Days" of flying. "Slim" was a wonderful man and told us some great stories of his barnstorming days. So interesting I could listen forever. He gave me some extra copies of newspapers he had on Lindy, whichwas great. He said his wife didn’t care for his hobby, so he spent many days alone with is aviation memorabilia. I told him if I lived closer I’d spend every day with him, as I enjoyed his place so much, he’d never get rid of me.

Well "Slim," "Happy Flying In Heaven" along with Eddie Harrington and Leonard Klassmeir who are no longer with us. Knew them since 1934 along with my friend Charlie Benjamin who is still with us. We hung out at Jamaica Sea Airport and Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn. Two or three years after Floyd Bennet they built the Marine Pk’y Bridge. Saw it being built from Floyd Bennet.
